Woking: What the Commissioners' Sixth Report Says
Woking Borough Council's commissioners reported in March 2026 that it is on an improvement path. A plain summary for local businesses and residents.
Woking is the smallest of ZRKEE's seven areas by population, with a strong cluster of professional services, hospitality and community enterprises. Here is what the government-appointed commissioners said about the council in their latest report.
What the report says
Woking Borough Council published the commissioners' sixth report on 24 March 2026. It says finances remain difficult, but the council is now treated as being on an improvement path rather than a recovery path. Government has committed to Exceptional Financial Support, and the council is continuing its asset disposals and the divestment of its companies.
Timeline
The council was placed under intervention in May 2023. The report says the Improvement and Recovery Plan is at an advanced stage and on track to finish in March 2027, with a streamlined focus on commercial and housing matters. Lead Commissioner Sir Tony Redmond said the "fundamental governance weaknesses that led to historic failings" have been largely eliminated.
What it means for independents
The report is about the council's own finances, so it does not change how local firms trade. The practical step is to check the council's business pages for rates, licensing and any support before you plan.
