Nature in Early Childhood: What the Princess of Wales Project Means for Childcare Businesses
A new project backed by the Princess of Wales looks at nature in early childhood. Here is what was announced, and what independent childcare providers can watch for.
If you run a nursery, childminding service, play group or outdoor learning business, a new announcement is worth knowing about. On 16 October 2026 the Centre for Early Childhood said the Princess of Wales has commissioned new work on the role of nature in early childhood.
What was announced
The project will explore how nature-rich environments and nurturing relationships can help babies and young children build core social and emotional skills. The Duchy of Cornwall is a founding partner, and the work will bring together academics, early years practitioners, charities and environmental organisations. It builds on the Centre's Shaping Us Framework and its Foundations for Life guide.
What parents told the pollsters
Polling commissioned by the Centre found that 84% of parents believe time in nature supports their child's wellbeing and development, but only 33% say their child spends time in nature every day. Most parents want more time outdoors and better access to nature-based experiences through childcare and education. This is Centre-commissioned polling, so read it as the Centre's reported finding rather than an independent survey.
Why independent providers may want to watch
Nothing in the announcement sets rules, funding or standards for childcare businesses. But it does show where attention is heading. The Centre cites parents' appetite for outdoor experiences in childcare, and it plans to work with early years practitioners. Providers who already offer outdoor time could keep notes on what they do and the feedback they get from parents.
What has not been announced
The Centre says further details will follow "in due course". There is no published timetable, budget, list of outputs or full partner list beyond the Duchy of Cornwall, and no announced funding for providers. Check the Centre for Early Childhood's news page for updates, and your local authority's early years team for anything that affects your own registration or inspection.
