Croydon: A Shop Front Grant Aimed at Independent Traders
Croydon Council's Shop Front Improvement Grant offers up to £5,000 to independent businesses. Here is who can apply, what it covers and what to check first.
Croydon has some of the most varied independent businesses in ZRKEE's seven council areas, from cafés and barbers to coworking spaces and local media. If you run one from a Croydon shop unit, there is a council grant worth knowing about.
What the grant offers
According to Croydon Council's Croydon Means Business pages, the Shop Front Improvement Grant gives up to £5,000 per business from a total fund of £50,000. It is meant to help existing local businesses improve the look of Croydon's high streets and district centres.
What it can pay for
The council lists new shopfronts, signage, windows and doors, external decoration and lighting, and accessibility or energy-efficiency upgrades.
Who can apply
The page says the business must be independent, small or micro, already trading from Croydon premises, locally owned (no franchises or national chains) and holding a valid business lease. You need three quotes for the work, and a council surveyor checks them. Planning and building control requirements still apply.
Timing: check before you plan
The council page was published on 23 March 2026 and says applications open in April 2026 and are assessed first come, first served. It does not give a closing date, so confirm with the council that the fund is still open before you commission any work.
Finding Croydon's independents
ZRKEE currently lists 22 verified independent businesses in Croydon, so you can see who is already trading near you before you shop, partner or apply.
A note on the council's finances
Croydon Council has issued Section 114 notices, which is one reason ZRKEE focuses on helping local independents stay visible. A Section 114 notice does not stop the council running the services described above.
