Birmingham: Grants and Business Rates for Independent Businesses Under a Section 114 Notice
Birmingham City Council says business rates still need paying under its Section 114 notice. It also lists SME grant programmes. Here is what its page says.
Birmingham is the largest of ZRKEE's seven areas, and its independents range from cafés and bars to jewellers and record shops. Birmingham City Council's page for businesses explains how its Section 114 notice affects them.
Business rates still apply
The council says the notice "does not have any effect" on its statutory requirement to bill, collect and recover business rates and BID levies. Keep paying the amount shown on your latest bill.
What the council says continues
It says it will honour contractual commitments and pay invoices for work delivered. The Enterprise Zone can still progress projects and release approved funding, subject to spend controls, and major projects including Smithfield and Paradise continue, although some proposals may change.
Grant programmes the page lists
- West Midlands SME Grant Programme: £15 million for small and medium-sized businesses, with grants of £5,000 to £100,000 to develop, grow, invest and create local jobs.
- Net Zero Grant Programme: £5,000 to £100,000 for eligible businesses investing in energy and resource efficiency.
Check the date
The page was last updated on 11 March 2024, so confirm with the council or the West Midlands programme that these grants are still open before you apply.
