From apprenticeship to AI: the livery’s next skills challenge starts now.

The livery helped build technical education before. The next generation of work needs the same confidence and urgency.

Training has always sat close to the livery tradition. City of London material traces that role from craft standards and apprenticeships into technical education, including the establishment of City & Guilds in 1878 by the City and 16 Livery Companies.

That history creates a demanding modern benchmark. Artificial intelligence, cyber security, retrofit, advanced manufacturing, digital commerce and new professional pathways are changing work faster than traditional institutions can comfortably respond.

Heritage becomes strongest when it gives the next generation an unfair advantage in preparedness—not when it asks them simply to admire the past.

Three immediate moves

Make careers routes visible. Pair experienced livery members with young people and career changers. Translate charitable and educational activity into searchable opportunities with clear eligibility, dates and contacts.

Alive! can become the front door: profession → interest → relevant Company → verified route to learn more. That is a small digital journey with potentially large civic consequences.
