Philanthropy is one of the livery's defining modern strengths. The scale is clear from the Livery Committee's Livery Impact Report 2025.
The numbers
- £81m of aggregate charitable giving, with £33.9m going to education
- 76,100 hours of volunteer and professional pro bono support in 2024
- More than 1,000 school governors and trustees appointed by livery companies, according to the Brewers' Company
The Pan Livery Pro Bono Interest Group values the professional pro bono part at £4.5m.
The navigation problem
This work is spread across many organisations, causes and channels. Someone who needs a bursary, a mentor or a volunteer opportunity may not know which Company to approach.
Better discovery, better participation
Alive! is not trying to turn philanthropy into a league table. The aim is better navigation: helping people find causes, educational work, volunteering and professional support, and the Companies behind them. Try Alive!
Immediate action: make one current programme, partnership or opportunity easier for the public to find today.
